How much space does the 8M take up when rack mounted?
The 8M needs at least 5U of rack space. The unit’s height when rack mounted is 7.25″. Standard rack spaces are 1.75″ each. Rack-mounting the 8M leaves a blank space of about 1.5″ above the unit — roughly a quarter of an inch less than one full rack space. Because the 8M’s rear panel slopes at an angle when rack mounted, and its jacks are near the bottom of the rear panel, this gives a bit of extra clearance above the jacks. If you want to minimize rack space, right-angle cables can help, but you may need to plug them in before securing the unit in the rack, and it may prevent connecting/disconnecting cables later without removing the 8M from the rack. If you want to freely connect and disconnect cables while the 8M stays in the rack, leave one additional empty rack space above it, and it’s still a good idea to use right-angle cables.
